In celebration of the Day of the Dead, I was inspired to paint a tribute to Frida Kahlo and her surrealistic style. My painting “Four Fridas” depicts her at four different ages: as a young cross-dressing rebel, as a mature woman seated in her wheelchair who is holding herself as a child, and as the Day of the Dead Caterina Calavera outside the window. The distinctive hairless Xoloitzcuintli dog at Friday’s feet was traditionally seen as a psychopomp that guided the dead to the underworld. The pre-columbian statue of a Xolo dog wearing a human-face mask belonged to Frida, and a paper mache folk sculpture of Judas in the back corner was made by her.
