This is a painting taken from a rock found during one of my walking around the town of Belalcazar, Cordoba, Spain. I spent just over one month at the Convento de Santa Clara in the town at the residency La Fragua (an amazing place for artists). During the long hot Summer there in June and July I created many paintings and drawings of which this is one that I brought back with me. The rock I took inspiration came from the agricultural land around the Convent and in it I saw the shape of a bird which looked fossilised.
The painting was a further study in how we see and how our minds interpret what it sees and pulls from the rocks, further exploring our relationship with the landscape and our interpretation of reality. I consider these as still life landscapes.
