My mum's family comes from a tiny community of Old Believers located in a lake district in north-eastern Poland. My early memories created a strong emotional bond with lakes, so it made sense that when Mariliza took a few days off from saving the world from her lab, I almost kidnapped her to explore lakes close to our house in south London. We found an amazing deserted spot hidden in reeds and oak trees. The day was calm and we spent it reading books and chasing adventurous ants on our blanket.

In the evening I took the camera and sat on the tiny pier close to our picnic spot. I noticed baby fish in the water, I heard hidden animals all around me. I was waiting. The opening in the reeds created a frame in which I saw the wonders of nature - the sun slowly traveling down, dragonflies dancing in weird patterns, waterbirds marking their paths with tender strokes on the lake surface. After a long while the sun hid behind the clouds and the wind stopped - everything was slowing down in preparation for the night.

They showed up unannounced. Slowly, like ghosts summoned from thin air, the silent bodies of boats broke the monotony of the landscape. Their pale skeletons fiercely pronounced against the dark forest. I tried to capture the rhythm they proposed, a hidden melody audible only to sensitive ears.
