Tranquil and atmospheric seascape etching of Mermaid Bay, Folkestone.
As daylight fades and the soft blue light of night sweeps in across the water, this etching evokes a feeling of peaceful spaciousness. The beach is quiet and the pale lights begin to light up areas of the town, with the reflections spilling across the bay below. The night sky stretches above, gradually lightening as it reaches the horizon line in the distance.
Five prints are available of this seascape, from an edition of just 25 prints from this etching plate.
To create this etching I have used a zinc plate, aquatint (melting resin dust onto the plate with a flame, to allow the ink to 'grip'), litho crayon, acid and burnishing. Then professional etching ink is smeared onto the plate and selectively removed (please see additional photograph of plate). The image is created by placing the inked plate onto the bed of an etching press, with a damp sheet of 'Somerset' heavy weight, white paper, laid on top. The press is then 'hand wound', pressing the plate and paper together, transferring the image from plate to paper.
