What could be more glorious that a field of poppies in full bloom? But how to capture the colours and textures was the question I asked myself as I set to work?

This small original monoprint has several layers of coloured ink that contribute to its rich, tapestry-like surface. I thought a lot about the subtle green/gold/red colour contrasts that give an optical “pop”. One innovation was to use a range of reds rather than just one so as well as the vermillion we associate with poppies there was also magenta and orange – a colour chord rather than a single note which I think adds depth and richness.

A monoprint is a one-off hand-made print, just as unique as a painting. I used rollers and dabbers to spread out the ink then made marks with a cloth and other tools. I built up layers of over-lapping colours by printing several times. I incorporated textures by impressing inked up wallpaper and fabric. I also used paper stencils to make the crisp edges.

The frame is solid oak, just beautiful natural wood 2cm (front) x 2cm (side) . It has an acid free double window mount and art glass for UV protection and greatly reduced reflections. Ready to hang with d-rings and string attached. Carefully packed in a strong purpose-built cardboard box .
