Flora* is a woman holding a green bouquet of white flowers, wearing a large bright ring on her hand.
The rising floral energy is picked up by her long hair that falls over her upstretched arm, to then fall in bright droplets of light throughout the blue.
Her arms takes on some of the characteristics of a tree's branches, illustrating one of my recurring themes: metamorphosis.
This acrylic artwork is painted on deep canvas in blue, green, burnt sienna and white.
I have used Winsor & Newton Professional acrylics in my very favourite combination of Phthalo Blue and Burnt Sienna, but this year 2021 has seen brighter greens entering into my palette.
This has been inspired in part by two beautiful peacocks that visit my garden each Spring; I find their rich blue/green feathers are uplifting and fascinating.
The image is painted around the edges of the sturdy W&N canvas so there's no immediate need for a frame.
Signed bottom right underneath the white droplets.
Ready to hang
(23.5 x 35.6 inches).
*Flora is a goddess but is also the Latin word for “flower” ... before she was a Roman goddess, she was a Greek goddess by the name of Khloris. In Greek this means “green” ... which is where we have the word chlorophyll from. I also like illustrating the myth of my name 'Phyllis' - a Greek goddess pursued by Demphön, she transformed into a tree to escape his advances. This metamorphosis them has recurred theme in my artwork since the late 1980s.
