Original artwork description:

The Fitzbillies' original shopfront on a Spring afternoon. Founded in 1920 by Ernest and Arthur Mason, using their ‘demob’ money from the First World War, their initials are still visible in worn-out gold letters on the shop front. The two people with binoculars are watching for peregrine falcon fledglings that have been nesting for years in the Pitt Building opposite.

Having black coffee and macarons while sketching at Fitzbillies is how this collection was born. Wondering about the people at other tables, their laughter, coy glances and ice-tea with two straws.

Fitzbillies is quintessentially Cambridge and everyone you meet will have their own story. Whether it’s afternoon tea meeting future parents-in-law or a 20-year old memory of Chelsea buns with your grandad after school, Fitzbillies has a place in the hearts of everyone who knows it. This exhibition is about capturing the inimitable character of Fitzbillies, its patrons, its staff and its bakers. In short, these paintings are here to celebrate life at Fitzbillies.
