La Pointe Courte is a picturesque little fishing harbor in Sète (south of France) which hasn't changed much in centuries. This oil was painted on a linen canvas over a period of 3 months. The long delay can be explained by the technique. Glazing consists in adding thin and nearly transparent layers of paint on top of each other. The finished work has between 8 and 12 layers depending on the opacity of the pigments. It's a long process because a drying time of several days is necessary between each layer. But the result is worth the effort: glazing produces a sensation of depth and provides toned radiance and visible smoothness.
Watercolours made on site were used as studies.
