I've recently started painting on a large scale using substrates other than canvas. This is painted on a pale green damask. It's unnerving painting a face on this scale, there is a constant traipse backwards and forwards to make sure it's working from a distance. The self coloured embroidery pattern of the material lend another dimension to the painting.
It is not on a stretcher but has four eyelets along the top so it can be hung directly on a wall, there is a certain stiffness to the material and the uneven edges are purposeful, the pin marks where the material was stretched on boards give it an urban feel.
The title is because, as I was painting, it started to look more and more like the Borg Queen from Star Trek: First Contact. If you don't know it - take a look and you'll see what I mean.
