When Spring arrives, it feels like an audacious act of hopeful celebration, to bring in the new in an unashamed, progressive joy. After the winter lockdown in the UK of 2020, the arrival of Spring felt like an explosion of the senses. In the words of David Hockney, 'they can't cancel Spring'. There are darker elements to early Spring, a reminder of the struggles faced in the past. The bare stems of trees are still explosed against a backdrop of ever-increasing foliage. I wanted to capture an element of this momentum whilst honouring it's celebratory nature, hence the title, 'Fiesta'.
