46 x 38 cm - paper and acrylic on canvas - 2023
Fast Fashion refers to these clothes that are quickly made, in deplorable conditions for those who make them and for the planet, sold at very low prices, in collections that are changed very frequently, and thrown away as quickly as they were bought.
Fast fashion produces 150 billion pieces of clothing per year. Textile workers earn on average 5 dollars for 12 hours of work, mainly in Asia. Our clothes travel an average of 20,000 km before arriving in our closets. We only wear 30% of what we buy. Every day, 3.3 million tonnes of greenhouse gases are emitted by the textile sector. Today, more than 65% of our clothes are made of synthetic fibers (thus coming from petrochemicals). Every year, 9kg of clothes are thrown away per person.
Faced with the injunctions of fashion, capitalism, overconsumption, faced with the exploitation of human beings (often women, children), do not allow ourselves to be invaded and regain control.
For this painting, I used an atlas page focused on Southeast Asia, the most clothing-producing region (China and Bangladesh).
Sources of figures: Catherine Dauriac, Fashion, Tana Editions (2022)
The canvas is varnished and equipped with a hanging system.
