Original artwork description:

This expressionist portrait of a woman is a symbol of self-discovery and exploration. When the full-scale war broke out in Ukraine in February 2022, a profound journey of self-discovery began for many Ukrainians. As a Ukrainian, I have been thinking about issues of identity, heritage, language, and culture. Using oil pastels to add depth and meaning, I completed a piece created in oil paints called Exploring Identity. It contains a powerful quote in Ukrainian from the poet Lesya Ukrainka, who embodies the Ukrainian desire for freedom while respecting the freedom of others.
