Eugene is yet again sitting at his favourite café on the little cobbled square at Place St Pierre in a quiet corner of Paris. Everything is just right about this little gem of a café. The gingham tablecloths, the trickling of the 18th century fountain and the pleasant shade of the old oak tree.
Eugene particularly likes the way Madam Duval, the ancient owner of the café, always comes and lights the candle on his table as soon as he arrives event though dusk is still a few moments away. A candle just gives such a warm feeling inside. Eugene has always been impressed by how old Madam Duval looks after her magnificent pot plants outside the café. They are always a cascade of colour long into the autumn.
Eugene is waiting for his friend Edith. They meet here often. They mostly sit in a comfortable silence watching the world go by. Sometimes they discuss life’s little niggles such as Edith’s scuffed ankles or Eugene’s slight overweight. A problem shared is a problem halved they say even though this might not be the case for Eugene. Well, they will insist on serving warm croissants at the Tenant’s Association meetings every week so what can one do!?
Eugene and Edith shares a pleasant bottle of red wine from the Loire. Eugene really prefers something meatier from the south of France but he knows that heavy wine does not do Edith’s gout any favours so Loire it is. This is the kind of selfless character Eugene is. As Madam Duval well knows.
Madame Duval did try to win Eugene’s affections some years ago but Eugene just wasn’t sure. Don’t misunderstand, Madam Duval is a cheery soul albeit a little old but Eugene just could not imagine waking up next to her every morning. He likes his own company, and Edith’s of course, and he likes being the master of his own destiny.
For the moment he is just relishing this little moment of solitude in-between day and evening, a little birdsong in the sky and the smell of Boeuf Bourguignon being prepared for tonight's menu du soir hanging heavy in the air.
The collage is mainly made by free embroidery on my sewing machine with cotton fabrics for the details on an off-white canvas material. The cobbles on the square has been created using gouache as is the faded canope on the cafe. Eugene is made of a soft creamy brushed cotton. Very huggable!
My signature is embroidered onto the front and Eugene's little story is printed on paper and comes with the collage.
The collage is sold unframed. I have taken a photo of it in a frame to show how lovely it looks when framed.
heavy cotton, mixed textiles, embroidery, gouache, lots of very silly imagination
