Garnet is a symbol of immortality and eternal life. It was here that I found an interesting parallel with the idea of Shakespeare's sonnet 81. The Creator dies, and the lyrical hero of his creations lives forever....
You still shall live (such virtue hath my pen)
Where breath most breathes, even in the mouths of men.
Just as for Persephone, pomegranate seeds became a means to remain alive and unharmed in the realm of the dead, and then come back to the light, so the one to whom poems, sonnets and paintings are dedicated is given the opportunity to live forever.
Garnet is a symbol of fertility. This meaning only complements the symbolism of eternal life. Children are an extension of us. Isn't that what immortality is?
