What greater source of hope is there, for all of us, than the empty tomb on Easter Sunday? Almighty God vindicated the perfect and infinitely precious sacrifice of Jesus, His Son, on the Cross by raising Him from the dead on the third day, just as Jesus had predicted to His disciples. This painting is my celebration of what the Easter message means to Christians everywhere. The painting began with a collection of Scripture passages, such as passages from the gospels of Matthew, Mark and John, and from 1 Corinthians, Acts 1 and Romans--all of which were sealed, painted and then collaged onto four pine hexagons, which I had previously arranged and glue together. Each hexagon is 8 ½”wide x 9-7/8” high x 7/8” deep or (8.5” x 9.875” x 0.875”), with a flat, solid pine face and an open, reverse side. So the overall width is 28.5” x 17” high, and 7/8” deep. I arranged the hexagons so that one of them has been turned to show its reverse, concave side, to suggest the empty tomb from which Jesus rose. That inner surface was painted gold and then covered in small, triangular mirror pieces, to reflect light out of the depths of death. It also reflects your own image as you look inside, to express the fact that all who believe in Jesus are made whole by His resurrection. You will see that some of the central pieces of glass purposefully have jagged edges, to echo the fact that, even after Jesus rose from the dead, He retained a semblance of the wounds He suffered for our salvation on the Cross. The triangle motif has been carried across the rest of the panels, which were overpainted in oils in a high-key palette of various yellows, with accents of tinted purple and blue. For the purposes of photography, the painting has been shown against a black backdrop. This painting has been given a satin varnish for protection, and hanging hardware is included.
