Original artwork description:

“Elterwater Twilight” is part of a series of paintings called ‘Cumbria 2020’. The painting is 57cms H x 77cmsW made on 300gms Arches Aquarelle Rough paper using watercolour, inks and acrylic paint. The paper has deckled edge and the painting will be float mounted to show this feature. This series of paintings has been developed from a recent visit to Cumbria U.K. All the locations are familiar to me and I frequently revisit the area. ‘Elterwater Twilight’ is based on a memory of an evening walk around Elterwater towards Skelwith Force. The evening light slowly falling over golden browns of Autumn. On this walk you pass through forested glades, open pasture and into a wooded area where the waterfall is gushing. My paintings are never literal and are best understood as gestural memories of being in a special place. In honesty you don’t need to know about the location, that is just the source of inspiration. Working on paper ensures that you have to make every painterly mark and stroke count. It is very immediate. No room for too many layers. Creative incidents are always prevalent in gestural painting and you have to let the fluidity of the paint dictate edge and shape. I am encouraged and inspired by modernists such as Barbara Rae and Howard Hodgkin and frequently reference the Impressionists and the Fauvists
The paper I’m using is of a substantial handmade quality and I have purposefully retained the deckled edges. The painting is float mounted on ivory coloured card and set in a perspex glazed custom made solid oak frame 92cmsW x 73cmsH . The painting is shipped in a heavy duty custom made cardboard crate. Also available in A3 print format.
