This was painted from life and is one of a small number of still lifes that I paint when the mood catches me. For some reason they seem to relate to themes of childhood, this one was one of my favourite (and I suggest many other people too) teas, boiled egg and soldiers, in this case sliced buttered toast. I felt that the combination of soft yellow and pastel blue somehow suited the mood, particularly when I managed to buy some blue gingham for the tablecloth. The cut egg in the eggcup is in the sharpest focus, everything else is in softer focus as you move away to the rest of the painting. The egg and indeed the toast didn't look so appetising on the second day of painting as it was starting to congeal.....
oil on mdf board, gessoed on both sides.
