I had not long returned from a visit to New York and felt inspired to try and get across the feeling of being surrounded and indeed overwhelmed by the size and scale of the skyscrapers, the "concrete canyons" other people have talked about. I gave it a surreal feeling by having it deserted but for one solitary figure that also gives it a sense of scale. A popular painting but still unsold!
