Morning dawns at low tide on a beach in southern England. It is 1940 and a nazi magnetic mine dropped from an aircraft, has washed up off Whitstable sands. Three men from a group walk out to make it safe. They are Commander Edward Obbard, Lieutenant Harold West and Lieutenant Commander G. A. Hodges, an expert in mine disposal. At the scene Eric Ravilious, acting as war-artist, made a watercolour painting titled 'Dangerous work at dawn'. His watercolours have a rare delicacy but he also made prints. This print is my interpretation of his watercolour and I wonder whether that would have made him smile.
This a relief print pulled from an engraving in rubber. All materials used are of high quality. The sheet would fit straight into an 11 x 13 inch frame. The image size is 7 x 8¼ inches, giving an all round margin of 2 inches and a little more at the bottom where it is titled and signed.
heavy wove paper, oil-based printing ink
