I was born on an island and in another life I spent protracted periods of time on small exotic islands - Borocay in the Philippines, Samosir Island in Lake Toba northern Sumatra, Caye Caulker in Belize, the Bay Islands in Honduras, Easter Island in Chile, Djerba in Tunisia, Hawaii, USA. There has always been a curious mystique about islands and island life. Island people are 'different' in some way; isolated, insular. Perhaps this is true. But if you live on a tropical island and it is a warm evening with the sun going down, the lights are coming on, some spare ribs are on the barbecue and the beers are in the cooler, you probably wouldn't want to share that with hordes of rowdy outsiders.
