Original artwork description:

Here's one from the history books. Paddle steamers like this were a regular sight along the UK coasts. The Duchess along with her sister ship the Duke used to run along the south coast of Devon and Dorset. Using harbours where they were available alternatively running a gang plank off the bow when the bow was pushed up onto the beach. On occasions this method could be difficult especially if the tide was falling.

In August 1934 on Sidmouth beach the Duchess got stuck. It was a spring tide that was falling rapidly, the stern anchor used to hold the ship at right angles to the beach dragged when the wind freshened. Additionally as the Duchess was blown around one of the wooden groyne posts used to protect the beach from erosion pierced the hull. She was high and dry for a while and when the tide came in she filled with water and became a total loss after stormy weather pushed her around again and further up onto the beach.

This shows the Duchess at low tide with people able to walk right around her.

Published from this drawing is a limited edition of 100, the same size as the original drawing and showing all of the intricate detail of the original. Printed on Fabriano ivory coloured paper using a wet litho technique so these prints do have an appearance similar to an etching.

Please note that this limited edition is being offered for sale as print only and some of the photographs show mount/framing as examples only. Do request if you require any advice about framing.
