Whilst staring at a blank sheet of paper wondering what to draw, I started to think about what painting had the most influence on me over the years and the answer was Georges Seurat’s painting titled Bathers at Asnieres.
The reason is not the emotion of it but the atmosphere it portrayed. By using dots and making use of the white canvas he managed to create the heat of the day and the smell of the smoke coming out of the chimney in the background. This technique of using dots, now known as “pointism” stuck in my mind and I just started to draw with dots, I was not trying to create a Seurat painting, I was just hoping to create an atmosphere rather than an emotion and if I have created both then that is a bonus.
Ink and soft pastels.
