40 cm in diameter (round canvas) - paper and acrylic on canvas - 2024
Dolores Claiborne is part of a series of paintings dedicated to heroines in literature. The principle is simple: after reading the book, I create a painting related to the female character, using its pages.
Dolores Claiborne is a book written by Stephen King and first published in 1992. It is a long monologue, written in the first person, in which Dolores Claiborne denies having killed her wealthy employer, but admits to having gotten rid of her husband, whose disappearance was then considered an accident. Dolores Claiborne is a woman who describes herself as simple, not having a great culture, but who fights so that her children can get by. Her husband, Joe, is an alcoholic and hits her. Dolores endures, for the children. But everything changes when her teenage daughter confesses to her that her father abuses her. It is following these revelations that her "inner eye" opens. Since then, it will not stop showing her the horrible reality, the true face of her husband. When she decides to run away with her three children, Dolores realizes that Joe has emptied the bank accounts. She then has only one option: to kill him. She takes advantage of an eclipse to lose him in the moor behind the house and Joe falls into the old well. His body will be found a week later.
The murder, the eclipse, the domestic violence, the inner eye: everything is present in the painting. I represented it in two ways, to choose from. With bloody fingers, Dolores can defend herself from her husband's blows, or protect herself from the eclipse after having dealt Joe a last blow. In the back, helped by the round shape of the painting, Dolores' inner eye accompanies her, the element being very present in the book.
The canvas is varnished and equipped with a hanging system.
