There has been a couple of seasons of the year when I see a converge of a variety of birds. This piece was done after such a period a few years ago when I captured in a photograph about 8 species of birds in large tree in my back yard. If was late in the summer and many of the leaves had already started to fall. As I painted I decided to element the leaves to highlight the diverse gathering of birds.
I use wood panels (sometimes canvas). First layer is built with plaster or modeling paste. Acrylic washes are dabbed or poured on the wet plaster/paste. When the surface is dried I manipulate it by sanding and scratching. More layers are added by repeating this process. Oil paint is used for final layer defining shapes referencing birds and nature.
Impasto, texturizing tools, palette knife, acrylic washes, oil paint
