Dietrich von Hildebrand spoke of two kinds of 'beauty'.  The first comes from the visible and audible realm and is explicable with the senses.  Yet, there is a second degree of beauty, which surpasses the aesthetic capacity of the physical and this quality of beauty seems to descend from above, arousing an elevated notion in the beholder. 

This painting is exploring that relationship between beauty and the beholder - asking questions about perception and whether what makes something beautiful is indeed only what is seen in the colours, form and harmony, or if there is something metaphysical in art, which as von Hildebrand claims, is transcendent.
