Original artwork description:

There is little doubt that habitat loss, including deforestation, is one of the greatest threats to animals and plants. How are we going to reconcile the increasing demands of an increasing population of people who aspire to be as wealthy (and therefore consuming natural resources) as we are fortunate to be? I feel guilty about nearly everything I do, as even a cup of coffee has consequences for resources and habitat loss.

This work uses some of the paper-thin outer bark of a silver birch which we had felled a few years ago. All the wood from the tree was used in our log stove, and this painting has the last remnants of the tree. Please note that inquisitive fingers could probably remove the bark from the painting, so it shouldn't be left alone with small children!

The construction is canvas stretched over a wooden frame which is not visible. It is ready to hang.

Materials used:

Acrylic paint brushed over canvas. Silver birch bark also included in the painting. Some marks made with brushes, others with palette knives.
