This is an important work in my painting career. I had spent much time before painting skies, seas, width and atmosphere until I was really satisfied with this painting because it caught all that I thought was important in painting the sea atmosphere.
The color blue, especially ultramarine blue is very special to me and has an interesting history in art. Ultramarine Blue is a warm blue, it is calming and can help to relax you, it is also a spiritual and sacred color that emphasizes width and space.
It is a painting with a deep handbuilt canvas frame, it has a special handmade chalk prime ground, all colors (gouache and egg tempera) were hand mixed with high quality lightfast pigments. The painting is made with approx. 80 very thin layers, this way built up like the old Dutch masters used to paint from thin layers to thick layers, from gouache to eggtempera. This painting has no pure oil color, but egg tempera has oil in it and this gives the painting a silky shiny finish in the upper half that protects it without any further varnish needed.
Also, blue colors will never appear cold when painted with egg tempera, they will keep a warm shade and that is different to a lot of blue acrylic works.
You will also find a lot of interesting shades, brushstrokes and textures when looking at the painting that are not easy to catch in photos. It is a very special and unique piece!
100x123x4 cm, deep canvas. Handmixed gouache, egg tempera and little pastels, signed and titled on the back. Sides painted ultramarine blue, ready to hang.
(c) Gesa Reuter 2008
Attention: Blue and green colors are very difficult to photograph. The photos show the colors more blue than the painting is in real life. It has more shades of blue and hints of green blue. The lower part is mainly a powdery ultramarine, but the upper half has more different shades.
