Artwork description:

October 2016: Douthat State Park, Virginia. We were traveling through Virginia and reading Michael Shaara’s The Killer Angels. A week earlier, in Pennsylvania, Gettysburg affected us both, unexpectedly & profoundly, and led us to learning more about the Civil War. The Killer Angels brought it to life with force – we passed through the Shenandoah Valley lost in thoughts of the past, imagining the sound of boots on the ground and armies marching. ⠀

We camped all alone at Douthat night – the last night before the campground closed for the winter. A couple dozen campsites sat empty around us with no sign of life and no sound but the wind. We explored the park, wandering along the trails in filtered sunlight through silent woodland turning gold to red around us, our footfalls swallowed by fallen leaves. And we wondered about the ghosts of men who might have died there. ⠀

The red on the leaves looked like blood.
