De Wallen (the Walls, from the walled canals) - the notorious Red light District of Amsterdam - is centred on the streets and alleys around the two narrow canals Oudezijds Achterburgwal, and Oudezijds Voorburgwal. In medieval times this area was close to the Damrak harbour area of Amsterdam - now mostly filled in - hence the prostitution. These days de Wallen is a rowdy tourist area of sex clubs, 'coffee shops', bars and prostitutes vying for trade in their colorful windows. It is a sleazy crime-ridden area which the current mayor of Amsterdam, Femke Halsema, wants to clean up. Whatever your view of de Wallen the activity reflected the narrow canals creates and abstract effect that is hard to beat.
