De Smorenhoek – 17-12-20
A Beautiful Meadow
Some time ago I visited De Smorenhoek, a small but long meadow surrounded by wood embarkements. From Beek-Ubbergen it runs upwards to Berg en Dal. For years I haven’t visited the area and I thought I should visite it once more. Unfortunately it was a drizzly day and even though the scenery showed great motifs it was too grey to spot some exciting tonal ranges. Lucky for me my dad visited the place a week later and took this photo on the exact spot where I took one the previous week. Of course I am his son and so I must have herited his feel for composition from him.
Hofvijver Inspiration
It so happened that I sold my grapite pencil drawing ‘De Hofvijver – 20-03-20’ a couple of a days ago. Perhaps I got inspired by it since I made this one also in my impressionistic style with hatched strokes. That drawing also inspired to emulate the rays of sunlight but then cast across the meadow.
Dark and Light Play
I decided to have the wood embarkement in the front serve as a gigantic repoussoir. The woods in the back I left rather vague so they would make a nice contrast with it. The tree in the front at the right side of the paper, contrast the repoussoir by a halo of light around the leafs. This is a kind of double whammy with regard to creating depth. I hope I drew it as nice as the perceptive ability of my dad.
