A strikingly contrasting oil painting of a large, old-fashioned window shedding pale morning light into a dim room, the darkness of which is rendered in a rich, obsidian black. The strong contrasting colours in this piece give it a sense of both movement and stillness. I was inspired to paint this after a trip to Montsalvat (a collection of quiet, dimly-lit faux-medieval buidlings situated in a sprawling garden) in my home town of Melbourne! The absolute stillness of the silent interiors and the golden-hued dust motes in shafts of light falling through the high, thickly-silled windows gave me such a feeling of tranquil reflection and pleasantness. To create the deep black in this work I built up many layers of burnt sienna and ultramarine blue glazing.
