Original artwork description:

This is one of three Oil Pastel on Black Paper drawings done over a week at sunrise looking west down the beach from the balcony of our hotel in the Château in Kenting. I hadn’t originally planned to get up so early but as often happens when we travel I get excited and wake up early. Rather than turning over and trying to go back to sleep I decided to have a peak at the sunrise and it just so happened that it was the perfect time for me to draw outside as it wasn’t too hot yet and the light was beautiful. (It is too hot to be sitting and drawing outside in the sun from around 11am until 4.30 pm and even in the shade it gets too hot! )
So I decided this was one of my best chances to draw my favourite way “en plein air” or outside in nature and started to do it each morning at sunrise. It was way too bright to draw facing the actual sunrise so I had to draw the west facing view which was being warmed by the early morning light. It’s never that easy for me to get up so early but it was very enjoyable to try to capture the beginnings of the day and watching the different colours coming into view as the sun began to warm things up. It’s always worth getting up at this time whenever possible as the start of each day is so peaceful and beautiful and the world has a unique and special feeling about it.
In this version of the scene I wanted to focus on the different tones and colours of the tropical ocean water and the undulating sandy beach sculpted by the waves.
