The Abbey has stood on this site on the River Bure near Ludham for 1000 years and was the only one in England not demolished by Henry IIIV, but fell empty 50 years later. The extensive walls and buildings were slowly demolished by local people as the stone was removed for local building work. Eventually only the Gatehouse remained and in 18th century a red brick wind pump was built within it! This view through the mist is from the very limited high ground around the abbey gatehouse and aims to illustrate the mystery and emptiness of the site. The site is still consecrated and a religious service is still held there once a year by the Bishop of Norwich.
