The seated posture and direct gaze give Darius an imposing and almost timeless presence. His bare torso highlights an apparent vulnerability contrasting with his implicit authority. The lioness and her cub symbolize royalty, power and protection, qualities associated with Darius the Great. Their proximity to Darius evokes a harmony between wilderness and man.

The rich and colorful patterns of the shorts contrast with the simplicity of the rest of the composition, bringing a cultural touch with a nod to the Persian carpet.

With this new work from the series "En majesté" Nicolas Maureau continues to explore the representation of power, skillfully mixing historical symbolism and contemporary interpretation, he offers a reflection on power, identity and coexistence.
