Artwork description:

A door is an important element of any structure. A symbol of passage from one place or state to another.

The act of passing over a temple threshold means that the faithful must set aside their personalities and materialism, to confront the inner silence and meditation that it symbolizes.

In homes, a door is the gateway to a refuge or the warmth of a hearth, but also symbolizes communication, contact with others and with the outside world. A closed door signifies rejection, exclusion, secrecy, but also protection against dangers and the unknown.

This is a collage of images taken from over 15 trips to India. From Himalayan Buddhist temple doors in the very far north of the country, through the opulent palace doors of Jaipur and Udaipur, to the deep south of the country and the temple doors of the endangered Todi tribe.

This artwork is limited to just 10.

Dāra, the title of this piece, is Marathi for "Door".
