Damsel in Distress is inspired by the detective and mystery "pulp" magazine covers of the 1930s and 40s. It shows a frightened young woman desperately making a call for help in an old-fashioned telephone booth. Jane has used interference, metallic, and iridescent paints to give the painting a vivid luminosity. The background changes color from reddish purple to cool blue depending on the angle of viewing and the lighting.
