acrylic colour on handmade Thai mulberry paper (kada sa), deckled edge, 21.5 x 31 in., 54.5 x 79 cm.
I’m an orchid collector and grower. To me these epiphyte plants are floating nature sculptures and a great inspiration to me. Often the flowers have this Zen quality of appearing very briefly to change the complete look of an otherwise sleepy foliage attached to a tree trunk. And yes, there are wild orchids whose flowers look like this…
Painting is based on and inspired by orchids in my collection, and an event that occurred with this bird in our back yard.
Interesting story with this one. This is the second painting of this orchid with a bird. The first one painted quite differently, I took to a gallery in Bangkok. It was apparently well appreciated. It also disappeared... I did eventually get paid….
I use a traditional mulberry paper handmade in Thailand. It’s a thick parchment like paper, strong yet pliable. The paper is made to this size to get the unique, uneven deckled edges which adds to the overall textural effect. This page is strongly textured so the textural effect is even more. The close up pictures are to get a feel for the texture and brush strokes of the painting. The second close up highlights the text written on the painting.

About framing this painting.
When considering framing bear in mind to not cover up the deckled edges. This is one of the specialties of the painting, one of its charms. It is best displayed framed with a cut mat board around the painting so as not to cover the edges, thereby putting some space between the art and the glass and bringing depth to the framed art. It can also be framed simply with backing board and pressed with glass over the front without causing damage.
