James Murrell (c. 1785 – 16 December 1860), also known as Cunning Murrell, was an English cunning man, or professional folk magician, who spent most of his life in the town of Hadleigh in the eastern English county of Essex.
Thanks Wikipedia!
I drew (and painted) this dramatic portrait of the cunning man himself for use on an episode of the Antiques Roadshow on the BBC. Sadly the production of the episode was pushed back and this dark figure has rested in the shadows since!
I had a lot of fun preparing this vintage paper. Taking a page from my trusty Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady, I used ink, paint charcoal and tea to create an aged neglected look.
Need some spooky charm in your own house, this ones for you!
