My paintings are always painted with thick texture using the highest quality oils, layered on thick with a paintbrush and sometimes a pallet knife as well. There are often layers and layers of textural paint. For me, I feel that this is a crucial element to my work as it creates a certain amount of entropy which I feel is necessary for the creative process.
Sometimes I add cardboard, tissue or other materials to further the experience of the chaotic surface; I mix in old dried paint that I have collected from previous painting sessions and grate it down into bits and mix it in with the paint. In my paintings, you can see the brush marks and thick knife cuts deep in the paint. I hope the viewer can explore and enjoy the paintings surface area almost as much as the subject matter and the colour.
My paintings are made up of four separate canvases that are connected together by a wooden frame at the back which I have built myself. I do this because I enjoy the separation the four canvases give within the single space. You can almost approach the painting as four separate paintings within one, and play around with that idea. The gap between the canvases also creates a boundary that I can also play with and use within the work. I will be making larger ones soon with 6, 8 and even 10 canvases connected together.
