This limited edition etching is one of a series of interiors of the Woolwich ferries. There has been a ferry on this place across the river Thames since the middle ages and, in the absence of a convenient bridge, the crossing has been well traveled. Soldiers, dock workers, factory workers, shoppers, day trippers and goods vehicles trying to cross the river have used the ferry. The ferry’s lower decks have a poignancy which I've tried to capture in my work as the scenes for past ferry passengers and the dramas that may have been played out on the short journey across the river.

Materials used:

Etching printed on Somerset paper from a zinc plate
