In this latest A5 painting, my love of the 60's counterculture and cartoon-like drawing has combined to produce a striking image inspired by recent news and events in the UK.
The image shows a 1960's style hippy protester with her arm raised in a power fist, wearing a striped t-shirt, a military jacket emblazoned with a CND 'peace' badge, and sunglasses. Above the woman is the word 'protest' in capital, hand drawn letters.
I first sketched a version of this character years ago, but put it aside until recent events in the UK that have seen the tory government impose harsh crackdowns on the people's right to peaceful protest. I resurrected the character and the pose, and simply added the word protest, to create a more positive and hopeful image.
I've recently been painting more human figures in my work, after animating an entire music video of characters for a project a few years ago. My drawing of figures is inspired by my usual love of pop art, but also by comics themselves, such as Peanuts and The Beano. I've also always had a fascination with 60's music and art, and the general cultural upheaval that came in that decade.
I've included images showing the sketches that inspired this work, and the final photo shows my other recent A5 paintings that feature a similar human subject matter.
It is painted in acrylics on thick high quality standard-sized A5 paper.
PLEASE NOTE: the painting doesn't come framed, but I've taken photos of it in a white A5 frame for display purposes.
