This couple on the subway attracted my attention as they were relating in a sweet, conversational way. Their mutual attention showed empathy and connection. Their attire was very casual, but stylish. I enjoyed inventing colors that highlighted the composition and painting in a restrained but expressive brush strokes. I use photos as a point of departure and believe it's the best way to capture the subjects' gestures. This painting is one of two selected by the Art in the Embassies' program and just returned from Vienna.
