Construction workers at Westferry Circus

Westferry Circus is a road interchange and public space within the Westferry Complex and is part of the Canary Wharf commercial estate positioned between Limehouse and Millwall in London, and contains a two-level road interchange. There are two roundabouts, one above the other. It was designed by Laurie Olin. In this context, a circus, from the Latin word meaning "circle", is a round open space at a street junction. I made several drawings at Westferry Circus going back on different occasions, I was focused on drawing a large building site alongside the Thames, and from the upper level I had a good view of the foundation works, there were usually a lot of construction workers going to and fro and tourists taking in the scene and also people in nearby Cafe’s. There are also views of a Docklands light railway bridge at East India and the cafe was based a drawing in Hackney. The painting is part of a series of long-format paintings with multiple backgrounds and people moving freely between places. When we think of home we don’t just imagine the house or flat we live in but our extended neighbourhood and our travel to work.
