I love painting people. I love to capture their movement, their emotions, the dramas and the theatrics of life. I paint people to express their personality, their lightness and darkness.
I want my painting to tell stories, to capture character and movement. My earlier works were a little dark and realistic. As I’ve grown confident with my craft and with my ideas, I have grown bolder and more spontaneous, too, using the palette knife to build texture into my work.
I love the softness, details and the expressive colours of Monet’s water lilies, ponds and gardens. But I think I’m more like Van Gogh. I’m more impulsive, willing to push boundaries with bold colours, strong lines. I like to sculpt the paints with my palette knife and feel the passion and emotion as the image takes shape on the canvas before me.
In my collections, you will see hints of cubism, expressionism, surrealism and impressionism. But I’d like to think that I don’t fit neatly into any of these categories. My art is fluid, it has matured and evolved as I have evolved. My creations are intense, confident, often confused and always complex. My earlier works reflect the restrained melancholia of my early life. My more recent work is brighter, lighter and so much more adventurous.
