In psychoanalysis, shadows are negative aspects of personality that we don't identify with and tend to deny having. They end up buried in the subconscious.
Note the intentional disproportion between the shadows and relatively small buildings. This is to emphasise the catastrophic consequences of not dealing with one's shadows. They'll grow and eventually rule over our psyche, consequently influencing our behaviour, attitudes and beliefs. Acknowledge your shadow, face it and fight it. If possible, turn it into something positive.
