Several years ago I was blessed to live in Collioure, France; a Tiny, Magnificent Town on the Mediterranean just minutes from Spain. The “Fauvist” Movement was born in Collioure, and thus is retains its reputation as an Art Colony, visited during the High Season by hundreds of Thousands of Art Collecting Tourists from ( mostly) around Europe.
This scene depicts Collioure as seen from the window of a House Matisse Rented one of his first years living in Collioure. That very house was turned into a Cafe owned by a gentleman we became very friendly with. The second floor or “Etage” of the Cafe, is precisely the apartment Matisse rented. So I often sat sipping wine next to this window, sketching the view, and was in awe at the realization I was viewing the Town exactly as One of my Heroes had done over a century before...
A Castle. Dating to (if memory serves me) the Thirteenth Century, features prominently along the Port, sandwiched between otherwise Colorful Village Houses. Even though I no longer live in Collioure,I visit whenever I can, and am always reinspired. This canvas is painted around the edges so it can be hung, unframed.
