I've thought a lot recently about my grandfather who spent 60 years working as a coalminer, from he was 12 years old till he was seventy two. I cannot even begin to imagine what these men went through every day working underground in darkness. So that is the inspiration behind this painting - a group of miners at the end of their shift having just come to the surface where it is already turning to a murky dusk as was often the atmosphere on a wintery day - smoke lying heavily around the glens in Central Scotland or the valleys of England and Wales. You will note there are no hard hats here since this was the 1950s. A wee tribute to coalminers of our yesterdays.
