Artwork description:

A field of clover. Maybe you can spot a lucky one in there?

A Japanese-style woodcut print in a limited edition of 15 prints.

The process I am using is also known as Mokuhanga, a Japanese woodblock printmaking technique. For this particular print, I used Shina plywood, and various wood cutting knives/chisels. I print each layer by hand using a baren, a circular disc of bamboo, and a pigment suspension akin to watercolour which is brushed onto the block, and printed onto Hahnemühle Sumi-e rice paper. This is usually done in many layers, where colours and textures can be played with. In this particular print, I have had about 5 layers. As a result, using this process, the prints are individual, and vary slightly, and are therefore unique.

Since it is a monochrome print, I have used the reduction process meaning that for each layer I had cut out more of the woodblock, revealing more detail until the last stage of the block has little wood left on it. The process is irreversible and the plate is therefore called a 'suicide plate'. Once the series is printed, there will be no more of this particular print. You can get a glimpse of my process in one of the photos above.

Thank you for taking an interest in my art. I hope you can follow along on my mokuhanga journey.

I am primarily an oil painter but I have deep admiration for Japanese culture, philosophy, and craft. My journey has just begun and I am very excited about where it might lead to.

IMPORTANT!
Please note, that the secondary image in the frame is shown only as a suggestion on how it would look framed and in context. **This artwork is sold unframed.**

PS. I cannot guarantee which of the 15 prints of the edition will be yours. The first print of the series has already been sold.

Materials used:

Shina plywood, Waterbased pigment suspesion, rice paste, Hahnemühle 80g Sumi-e rice paper
