'City Songbirds' is one of my responses to the lock-down. ‘Rejoice The Hearts of Us Dwellers In Cities’ is a quote from a journalist describing why Londoners kept canaries in the 19th C.
This is a re-take of my 'London Canaries' print, as to me (and probably many other city dwellers) during lock-down, the sounds and sights of birds singing were one of the small joys to be had in a garden-less London flat. The freedom of being able to fly away anywhere in the world had become just a dream, and yet these tiny birds, who could still do just that, continued to mostly stay put, and instead entertain us and provide inspiration.
The limited edition print It is based on traditional natural history illustrations and book covers, and is a two colour screen print (black outline with gold lettering), which is then handcoloured with watercolours, to make each print unique.
Black outline and gold text screen printed onto Hahnemuhle 300gsm etching paper, then handcoloured with watercolours
