This is one of a series of works that recontextualize the Renaissance and Baroque Nativity painting, translating it into the language and world of early modernism. Borrowing from the ancient meaning of the circus as the arena of the gods, the drawing symbolizes the link between that significance and the idea of the circus as the domain of mortal risk and exuberant play.
